your associations are determined by which tools you use and what sort of missions you take. Mostly missions. If you take portals you get seer credit, if you use many mines you get destroyer credit etc. Next to missions are pictures of each of the associations so you can know what association credit the mission will give you. if you want to be a pathmaker take lots of pathmaker missions.

once you get to a certain level (I think it's level 5) you can only buy tools from your three associations, but at that point the divisions are pretty fluid, takes very little to change.

And take note, your Associations are not set in stone, even after level 5 they will continue to change...
In fact, I do believe that it is easier to change your Association after level 5...
