Just wondering when the system updates and awards badges. I've done a bunch of missions now but no luck yet.

Sincerely, The Achiever ;)

PS The "again" part of the title is I am having weird forum problems. Posted this once and it didn't show. I often have to reload forum pages several times before they show up properly.

Yeah, I was wondering how quickly things update too... trying to see how the missions work and stuff.

So the thing is, we have to cache a lot in order to run the servers coolly. The difficulty in this, obviously, is that games are expected (rightfully) to be more responsive than that. So for now, the badges update "at night" by our server that is run by Engine Yard, who I believe are based in Sacramento and St. Louis in the US.

There will be a lag of a few hours at least, in actually earning a badge after you'd done the work. We're trying to pry caching from lovely Duncan's cold dead hands. For now I'd like to help manage the valid expectations of our players by just letting them know that "overnight" their badges will appear. Ideally it will be immediate; for now it's a delay.

I would love your feedback on how to manage these sorts of compromises. My email is merci at gamelayers dot com.

Yeah - quite a bit of lag. I logged out last night at about 12:40 (after midnight), and just logged back in (it's nearly 8:20am) and I have 2 messages to say my 2 badges were unlocked only 18 minutes ago. So - that should give a vague idea of the lack I had (overnight indeed).

Not so bad. Daily updating isn't a bad idea, if only because it'll stop me obsessively checking stats every minute.

Heh, I so getcha Phae on checking stats constantly.

Merci, maybe all that is needed is just a line somewhere near the badges or on the profile page that notes it is updated overnight. Of course written in the clever style of everything else ;)

On a somewhat related note, I have to second the idea in some other thread about being to able to hide the gamebar. I'm personally way too used to "normal" level up bars such that I am finding it downright discouraging to see this one staring at me all the time but hardly moving. I love the idea of continual play, but looking at that bar... oof, anxiety!

Sincerely, Ms OCD ;)

Yeah - I think it's all about expectations. If a stat doesn't function in how you perform (i.e. like not being able to spend new data points for 24hrs would) then i guess folks don't mind lag so long as they know it's 'meant' and not 'broke'. If it's true then maybe that applies in full service mode too... though you start to lose a bit of the Pavlovian compulsion.

I think you guys have a great point here - we'll insert some language to make this clear. Here's a picture from the events feed, of the kind of badge stacking we see:

happening all at once!

What I'm wondering is if you only get one badge per achievement, or if you can get multiples of the same badge. Say, for example, a player visited over 100 sites in one day a couple times a week, would that player get a badge each time s/he did this, or just the first time it happened?

No, so far we have some stacking badges that are about to launch. Like invite 5 ppl, get a badge, invite 12 ppl, get another badge. All these badges have unique artwork and requirements, so that not every achievement stacks in the same way. The more badges we have, they more you'll be earning, that's for sure.

Right now we have about 20 more badges that are in the wings waiting to launch. We'll twitter or dispense a system-wide message when that takes place. :)

Hmm, the system seems to have just had an upgrade and I ended up with new badges--yippee! But...although my missions can be lengthy, I'm fairly certain that I haven't merited the Matchstick Girl badge yet. Believe me, I'm gunning for her, but I honestly don't think I've lit 250 lightposts...but I did play the previous version of pmog--does that make me an Alpha player? If so, I didn't get that badge.

Heh, I notice theres a Google-free badge. Surely there should be a badge for those Google-whores who cannot live without it's sweet, evil embrace? I can't go a day with all my Google-bits.

A mission I took today had a stop on the Google homepage; I am going to be totally miffed if I don't get the badge just 'cause I was there! Bah! A day w/o the Goog and I don't get the badge? Ooof...

Perhaps a badge for visiting Google 50 times in one day! I'd get that in about 2 hours! Google is my friend!

I've been on PMOG for a few days now and have gone on 40+ missions and have been to many, many sites. So...why aren't I getting badges? Anybody?

The Beta badger is apparently still on vacation with the groundhog...

I hope they come back soon, though--I like badges.
