It might be a good way to encourage forum participation, and general forum helpfulness / humour, if there was a little button on every post, which allowed people reading that post to send a DP to the author (to count as *earned* DP.)

I've seen this implemented in other fora as 'karma points' and though elsewhere it's turned into a mathematically-nightmarish algorithm for how many points people can earn and award and weightings and goodness knows what else ... seems to me a simple system would be fun here. If it comes out of the reader's DP, and they can't give what they don't have -- that'd work, right?

Occasionally I read a great post, or a plea, and I'll go and crate the author with goodies, but it's a hassle to do, and more of a DP-expense. A single "DP" button that I could tap everytime someone made me grin or told me something new ... would be fabulous.

(It would also make Pixielo very rich, so I expect a percentage for having this idea in the first place, okay Pix!?)

That's okay. I never expected anything for answering posts, and I'm not always helpful either...

I personally hate karma points. They had them on a forum for my video game MASTER'S level program. You would think master's students would be able to handle something as simple as karma, but noooo.

Within 72 hours they had to rip the system back out as people began petty sniping at people despite there being nothing in the forum to explain such malice. I think it is a generally bad idea.

Also as far as giving dp... it could be used as a "grief". I know I immediatly thought of using it against all those people who sit at level 3 and laugh at people who think it is worth it to level.

Can we have stylepoints that we can trade in for coffee mugs and mousepads?

I think we all know they would be called "bacon points" ... they could go toward requirements for your bacon badge :)

YES! I like Bacon Points for sure, or credit towards a badge...but thinking about what Emberdione said that karma could be used for evil as well...

a) The game devs need to make it worth their while not to do that
b) Not making any missions would be an effective prophylactic if one is determined to stay low

As long as the system is simple enough, I don't see how karma* can BE a problem. If points were displayed, it gets all competetive, and that's a bad thing -- but if they just roll into people's clicked-up fortune anyway ...

[* edited to add: yes, I have seen negative karma causing car-crashes in forums too, I was only thinking of it in a positive direction, though.]

P.S. I know I'm going to get thrown out of the Imaginary Bacon Badge Society for this heresy ... but ... not EVERYTHING in PMOG has to come down to 'bacon'. Bacon itself's not an enticing concept to a very large number of people for various dietary reasons, (religion, ethics, etc.) and yes, I KNOW it's just a bit of fun, I'm just saying it's not the ONLY kind of fun we can have.

Griefing just has to ruin everything. It certainly would be neat, though, to have a karma system. If there's some new and exciting way to earn DP I am all for it.

I personally don't see much wrong here. The amount of "karma DP" would probably be negligible, but you'd also be showing that their post was worthy in your eyes.

Also, there'd be no need to track it, maybe only show it to the people you give the DP to.

Other than forcing a level (which is hilarious that the current system could make that be griefing XD), there's nothing negative to the system. As such, there wouldn't be any sniping back and forth at each other over negative feedback.

But I'd still prefer some sort of moderation come to the forums first ;)

It would at least be cool to have a way to send a crate to a player directly from the post.

Generally I agree that it should be possible to reward people who make interesting posts. I would even go as far as to suggest star-ratings per thread so that the insightful ones can be shown.

Anything to make interaction rewarding while avoiding need for grinding and griefing should be good.
