I've used 8 lightposts since the tool reset, which comprises one mission of 7 lightposts and 1 mess-up.

I am supposed to get badges for what... 250, 500, 1500?

Uhm. Liklihood? Zilch.

I'm thinking an overhaul is in order.

Instead of encouraging users to gratuitously create useless lightposts, spam google.com with their tools, and not increase the overall resources, community, quality, and economy of the PMOG-universe... I say you give a person 1 tool usage for CREATING a MISSION, and one point for every person who TAKES their mission.

This will give no reward to gratuitous tool expungement, and encourage quality missions and reward those who create good missions and use their tools in a way that enriches our environment and resources.

Just a note @nieman:

If we change the usage method, the tool(s) count must again be reset to zero.

Using 500 pieces of armor really isn't -that- easy either. And you can always use lightposts as bookmarks for sites.

However, I'd enjoy hearing what others have to say about this, keeping in mind it would require a reset if this change were implemented.

I think I've decided to just use Lightposts as bookmarks...I highly doubt that I'll ever make missions with them...but I will be able to keep track of my ever-expanding love of very tall shoes!

The reset is a pain, man. That blows. Hard to imagine there's no way to get previous value of a database entry (such as the tool usage value for each tool for each player) shoot it to a safe place, change the counter, and then shoot in the value to begin at.

But yes, there are more than just this tool that are a bit un-even with the other tools such as crates, nicks, and mines. However I felt like this was worthy enough to suggest as a change for discussion... I hadn't thought of a solution to the other problems worth mentioning yet.

I have 7 missions with about 100 lightposts. I don't want to just randomly place lightposts; it feels like it's just exploiting the tool in a way it wasn't meant to be used. I'm ok with a reset. And I think counting it by number of people who take the mission - much as we do with portals - is a better way to view the passive side of missioning. More dependent on other people. I kind of like that.

I have to say I'm with Nieman on this. At my current rate, I will need about 1000 missions before I can get the final badge. I don't see that happening.

Hell no...I am too close to at least 4 other badges to live through another freaking reset...
It massively sucked the last time, I don't see why we need to do it again...ever!

Here's my $0.02: Yeah, it would probably make more sense as part of a "passive" thing if mission takers added on to your light post count. On the other hand? I don't think the badges are supposed to be that easy to get. You don't need to get *every single badge*.

Plus, with how the last reset went over...well, I don't think the majority of the community would like it.

pixielo said - I think I've decided to just use Lightposts as bookmarks.

My point in the other tool suggestion thread was that these non-mission lightposts should be visible to other pmoggers, like sticky notes. It kills two birds with one stone:
1. People aiming for badges aren't totally exploiting the system. :-)
2. Interesting comments are shared with others when they come across a page.

Just a thought.

Wow...I'd be freaked out if I ran into a post that didn't belong to a missions...
With text? Notes? Et cetera?

Oh, see, I was hoping it would be a reset of JUST lightposts and not everything else. Of course I don't want everything else reset.

Funny what you get accustomed to, eh? Ya I was thinking with notes, etc. My first thought was it could be a new tool - like a sticky note. A cross between a portal and a post. You could have something as banal as "I wuz here" to the type of commentary that goes on mission. But having stand alone posts might be another option??

I think standalone posts would be... decently in line with what lightposts seem to do. Reading the codex, order is all about tagging, organizing, and other associated actions to maintain proper cataloging of the entire intarweb tubes.

I don't see a 'public bookmark' being too crazy... except for EVERY FREAKING PERSON WHO PLACES THEM ON THEIR FAV WEBCOMIC.

I don't even read xkcd as much as I used to because I'm tired of the mission/portal 'tards.

Stand alone posts should be ratable, if we have them, so I can block them with my snooty 5-star requirements.

IMO do it, but don't reset.
You know who placed each lightpost, and you know who took which missions. Recalculate it all and change peoples usage that way.
Also, I have 0 lightposts used, so feel free to reset just lightposts :p.

Nothing that requires a reset. Please. Ever.

But then, I really like the 'sticky notes' lightpost idea. It would be an additional way of mediating the browsing experience for other users/community members. That is what I love about the game after all; the way in which internet usage becomes a collective experience. It forces you to think about the information on the net in new ways, informed by the actions of others. I feel that stumbling on lightposts commented on by the setter would be in the ethos of the game - illuminating the page so to speak, ordering the chaotic... It would function in the narrative of game in the same way that portals hijack players to unknown chaotic destinations, crates reward players etc etc.

Of course, you'd get a lot of graffiti (Iwuzhere) but you would also get some gems that open new ways of thinking about the sites you see.

(Btw - does anyone know if there is anyone writing about the collective mediation encouraged by PMOG? Or any other academic studies on the game mechanics? I would be interested very interested in discussion. I think I'll start a thread asking about it...)

I'm all for standalone light-posts, i just rarely use them at all because of how i browse. It might be nice to rate them and to have the possibility of shooting around to other stand-alone light-posts that aren't necessarily missions, kind of like a portal, but less random, you could one-click to other stuff that user likes, like a confined stumble.
