I've created a Greasemonkey script to replace all occurrences of 'earnt' with 'earned'

http://userscripts.org/scripts/s...

You crazy Brits are creating a new language over there.

Also, is that one forum supposed to be 'Straturgy' as an inside joke of sorts?

And would you change the name of the Shoat to 'piglet?'
The steampunk/Victorian theme kind of demands the attention to detail that using the word 'earnt' entails...and that spelling is accepted by all the respected dictionaries.
Should you feel the need to comment further on AmE v. BrE, here is a wonderful place to do so: http://separatedbyacommonlanguag...
Otherwise, could we please just enjoy the game?
: )
And, yes...Straturgy is a joke...a rather funny one if you ask me--I like that this game, and its designers, don't take things in an overly serious manner...

@yourmom,

Could you create a script that every time Capstinence posts something it just shows up as "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah"?

pixielo, no harm meant in this I just don't like that non-word. It falls along the lines of 'lite' and 'nite' as completely unnecessary abbreviations.

burdenday, that script would be a little more difficult but you could pretty easily change this script to rename Capstinence to anything else.

It's not a 'non-word,' it's an accepted British spelling, like colour, centre, petrol, etc.

'Lite, 'nite,' 'thru,' etc. are the evil products of the advertising industry, and those who need to spell in driveways...

It's not OED worthy yet whereas 'nite' and 'lite' are. It's also not the an accepted variation of the past tense of 'to earn' in other standard English dictionaries. I wouldn't go as far as calling it a British variation until some British Language authority publishes it.

Seriously, it's a game. Who really cares if it's earned or earnt aside from you? I sure don't.

very good, rather than argue any more it's here if you want it and ignore it if you don't. sharing it with those who might want it is better than keeping it to myself.

For real(z)... I don't care how anything is spelled but yourmom offered some help to those who do. It's not hurting anyone so if he wants to write a script for it then more power to him.

This seems to bring up all the same old arguments.

Personally the only issue I have with verb-age is Lightpost vs Lamppost.

Lamppost is correct.

Maybe Lightpost is the multi-dimensional, magical Pmog version?

my spell checker says lightpost is not right... And tries to replace it with light post. It likes lamppost though.

Oh, I agree that 'lightpost' is a made up word, but I think it fits in with the game.

I don't think Tauren is a word either... they should definitely remove that race from WoW. Change it to something real... like Cowmongous. ;)

With all due respect pixielo earnt is not, has never been and will never be an accepted British spelling. It maybe in common use like aks for ask or her for here but it is just lazy. It made me cringe the first time I saw it. Considering the setting I will let it slide as slang and enjoy it just as I enjoy my own made up words. But if you write that word on the chalk board youngster I will happily whip it out of you.

I will let a lot slide for setting and style but one thing that makes me unhappy and will continue to do so till it is fixed is; “you just updated their profile.” Now that upsets me, hands to the walls youngsters while I get the cane.

It's a colloquialism...and although it's slang, it doesn't seem to be on the verge of disappearing.
As much as people may dislike it, slang is frequently, commonly and popularly used.

Words have power, the better we use them them the more power we gain.Ignt words just brand us as ignorant. Let's stop playing games with words and use them with wisdom and style. Lets stop trying to make words up and use the words we have to make the argument?

Have to say earnt drives me completely nuts. I'm a writer and editor by trade and no other word on the site (or the weird grammatical stuff like 'you just updated their profile') irritates me quite as much. But sheesh guys, let it go already.

I guess I'm just amused at the thought that slang or whatever the OP was railing against constitutes improper use of English and can somehow be affected...
As long as there isn't a governing body for English...it's something to have fun with!
Word to that...

what makes this thread great now is that the script changes all the earnts to earneds so a lot of what people are writing here doesn't make any sense.
