I subscribed to a thread last night about an hour before I went to bed. I received, while I was awake, about 13 or 14 emails telling me it had been updated. About 5 of those were complete flukes; it had only been updated about 9 times before I went to bed. This morning I wake up to find 40 new emails, 38 of them from the subscribed thread. Excited that I was going to have 38 new things to read, I eagerly came back to the forum. Alas - it hadn't even been updated enough to create a new page. Only about 7 times! What could be causing this? People editing their posts? I find it really hard to believe that between 7 people (not even that many; there are lots of repeat posters), they had edited their posts 38 times.
If this is the case, I'd like to suggest that emails only be sent when a completely new post is submitted. It's annoying when the "update" to a thread I'm really following is "BTW So-and-So, chocolate chip cookies go great with hot cocoa!" or something random like that.

Yes, it emails you when a post is edited. I'm apt to agree with you though that 38 is quite a bit of editing, but historically the emails were only sent on an edit or new post.

There should probably be some exceptions to when you get emails. Like when you edit or add a post so you don't get an email telling you that you just added a comment, you already knew that...

But, I'm sure some people like, me included, being updated even when someone edits a post. I like to know because I deal with problems and when they are fixed people usually just edit the post to say the problem fixed. I won't catch it because I usually just check for new posts, but if I get an email and no new posts are up I know to check for edits so I can mark things off the list.

Maybe there should be different subscription options, one for new posts only, one for everything, etc...

Job security devs, I can helps wit it.

@theungodlyone That's a good point about being notified when you update a thread. I like your idea about subscription options.

Hey

I know what you mean about this, in the few threads I subscribe to, I have often eagerly checked my mail and clicked on the link only to find a small post edit. Unfortunately, I, like you subscribed to changed to the thread..

However, I am hoping that in the future this feature will be improved upon to give various options, it was added not too long ago, but since then other, bigger things have been happening.

I would personally like a PMOG message rather than an email update, as well as some other options, so I will knock up an email to the PMOG gods.

Thirded subscription options. I'd kinda like just a once a day update. With a note about how many things have been updated and where.
Or even just where. I usually just try and keep on top of the latest posts, but sometimes they fill up and off the screen too fast, then I have no idea what's going on where..

Edit:Dangit Craig! Fourthed instead.
Also, Congrats on the email you just got 'cos of my edit!

Best option would be to only send ONE "there is a new reply to this thread" email until the user checks the forums again, like most online forums do.

I've asked our illustrious Devs about this on a few occasions, and while it will be addressed as some point in the future...the only advice I have now is to use Gmail for the subscriptions as it automagically groups messages on the same topic together...
So while I may get 15 updates on one thread, I only see one line! Awesome!
