1) There's a website. I want to make sure it's mined.

2) I buy a mine.

3) I go to the target website...and trip off a mine...

4) I try to re-mine the site...and set off a St. Nick

5) I repeat steps 2-4, sighing this time during step 3.

6) I seriously wonder about the mechanics of dropping mines when my attempts to mine my target resulted in two **fewer** mines on the site that I wanted to make sure had a mine!

You seem to have explained the mechanics pretty well yourself, you tried to mine a site that was already mined.
You also has St Nicks on you!

I can empathise though, happens to me alot, it'd be nice to see how many mines are on a page and how many st nicks are on you at any given time!

Update:

7) I revisit the site with a new mine.

8) I step on yet another mine.

9) I finally get to place one of my one. Overall result of my actions is still -2 mines.

Can we have a safe way to visit a website when we want to mine it, please? (E.g., visit a website with a mine in hand: if it's mined, keep the existing mine intact and if it's unmined, place the mine?)

Maybe you can buy an item that like scans you for st. nicks or something? That'd be cool

maybe have the st.nicks not ALWAYS work, its ridiculous, someone can be pwnt for a loong time by someone with a good amount of st.nicks. they should only be like 50% effective.

But you can always get back at them by adding a few mines to their profile as well. Or ask your allies to mine them in revenge. Enough mines would make anyone have to get new armor.

(Rerailing...)

I'm not complaining about St. Nicks (well, not too much).

I'm trying to mine a specific site and I'm running into problems *with pre-existing mines*. Is there any way to safely check for the existence of mines in a potential target?

@wasabitea
If you want St. Nicks to have a failure rate mines should too.

As it is, if you want to place a mine on a website that has already been mined, consider your work done for you at no expense of your own mines.

"If you want St. Nicks to have a failure rate mines should too."

No, I'm not asking for that.

"As it is, if you want to place a mine on a website that has already been mined, consider your work done for you at no expense of your own mines."

That's not the case, either.

By the time I find out that the website has already been mined, I've already removed a mine that I didn't want disturbed. Sure, my work has already "been done for [me]", but I just undid that previous work when I didn't want to!

Also, it costs me one successful mining attempt for me to restore the status quo.

you may be able to pause the game until you get to that page, unpause then lay a mine - although you probably will still have a st nick problem

Great idea...unless...

Well, I tried that. Got a "Ha, we don't think so" error message, believe it or not.

I'm kind of confused, so you want to be able to browse the internet without setting off mines, but retaining the ability to lay mines? Mines are pretty indiscriminate, if you go to a site with a mine, you're going to trip it. Whether or not you plan on mining it is something completely unrelated.

No.

I do not want to be 100% invincible to mines.

Like I said before, I find it frustrating that my attempts to add a mine a specific site ended up removing more mines than I could place.

I think I understand what you are asking harmless, and the short answer is no.

There is no way to know if a site is mined. If you could, folks would avoid the site.

*thinks for a second*
Actually, I take that back. If you look in the events page, you can see if the site was mined. The only problem is the events page is fricken huge. You'd have to search through the whole thing to know for sure. If you could search the events log, you would be able to find out. But it's not setup that way.

Your best option is to go to the page, find out if there are mines. As for trying to lay mines on that page, I'm not sure if you can put your mines on top of someone elses or if its a first-come-first-serv situation.

I think it's first come first serve, though you can always click the mine button a few times to make a minefield out of the site.
Another tip would be to stay away from the bigger sites, like google, MySpace and those places. They're probably mined quite regularly, but then again, people will trip those mines just as often, so it's a fifty fifty chance I suppose. =P
