I notice that links spawned from https tabs (say, someone sends me a link in Gmail) are still seen as "secure" by the toolbar, even though the page isn't. Even blank tabs opened from Gmail (or Bloglines for another example) are marked "secure" and thus don't count.

Opening a new window and keeping it https-free seems to work, but is really annoying as essentially breaks how I'm used to surfing the web, which seems antithetical for something that's supposed to be passive.

Hey, I've just tested this myself, I think it might just have been bad luck on your part.
On mine it was still showing the "pmog doesn't track secure pages" if pmog lagged out when linking from https to http (instead of just the "finding items for this page" message like it normally would)
So, this is a bug, but it's not as bad as pmog not tracking URLs linked from secure sites =)
