First person to post the language it's in gets 50 DP. First person to post the translation gets 200. Both must be verifiable.

My first thought was to turn it upside-down. It looks a little like an Aramaic alphabet. I spy Ṭēth. |

Agree with teeman here. Although I wouldnt say thai, I didnt recognize some of the characters...however, some were very familiar...are we getting warmer typhon? |

Actually, I really don't know the answer. This isn't an artificial puzzle; I'm really truly asking :) The inscription is on a carved screen in a Santa Barbara restaurant called "Opal." The screen, which is about eight feet wide, appears definitely South Asian, maybe from the 19th or early 20th century. The restaurant staff don't appear to know the answer. |

Typhon, any possibility of getting a picture of the entire piece? Or is what you have shown us the whole thing? It looks arabic to me, I'll try to ask around the folks I know about it. |

It's an Indonesian script derived from sanskrit. I don't know which one or what it says yet. |

Alas, I didn't take a picture of the whole screen, just the inscription, and now I've left the area. It was too warm and sunny for me ;)

I vote some variant of Javanese. If it's read left-to-right-up-and-down-within-panels (and bearing in mind that I don't speak or read any variant of Javanese) it might be pronounced "hono so_do to_ bojo," although the Os might be As. |

Here are my notes on possible pronunciations for each character, going left to right. Ga or Ha.
La
Sa
Na
which leads me to believe that, going across the bottom, it reads Saranaya, as in "Thun Saranaya", from what little of Buddhism I know. Although I can also vouch for the fact that Sara is Javanese for Sun. SOMEBODY HALP ME HERE. |

No need for that sandman. Besides, if you know what language it is why don't you have proof or a translation? |

Hey, I read Hebrew too...and Greek, and Cyrillic--just to be able to sound them out. I don't actually comprehend what I'm reading. But it makes looking for airports/taxis and deciphering restaurant menus decidedly easier.

It's not hebrew, because the words don't say anything. Plus, it doesn't fit with the locale, nor the design of the screen.

Word. I will happily side with Asian writing. It's far too script for me to read anyway...
