"Are you gonna eat that?": Local agriculture, sustainability, organics and slow food.

Mission Description

In school, I conducted research on E. Coli and food safety for three years. My findings suggested that organic foods are much safer than conventional produce. However, lately I've been hearing a lot about locavorism, a movement to eat only foods that are grown within a short trip from the home. I wanted to know why local food is a good idea, what the health benefits of eating locally are, and how the local food and organic food movements fit together. I am lucky enough to live in a rural area on a subdivided farm where gardening is very possible, in the shadow of several towns and cities that host farmers' markets (where you can buy awesome heritage crafts, beautiful flowers, and yummy donuts along with produce). I also live in a state in which locally produced wine is a growth industry. I am going to learn as much as I can about the local food movement and the benefits of eating locally -- care to join me on this mission?
