South African Xenophobic Violence

Mission Description

It's not on the scale a natural disaster, and it in no way compares to the horrors of war. It is senseless, criminal violence, inspired by hate that is destroying peoples lives and livelihood. Thousands of people, mostly foreign nationals (many of whom have crossed the border from impoverished Zimbabwe), have been displaced, hundreds beaten and many murdered in South Africa's worst internal violence since the 1986 riots. I'm a lecturer, and several of my students have been severely affected by this situation, some have been displaced and are "crashing" at the collage, others have been threatened, and a few have even been attacked. The situation is very real and terrifying for me, and while the media is often guilty of sensationalising, the following articles are not over exaggerating the situation. I am creating this mission to raise awareness of the situation, and to show a way that we can provide aid to assist those affected. *this mission contains press images of violence*
