You can use Adobe Flex to make stunning rich Internet applications from scratch... then very easily transport that knowledge along with your knowledge of JavaScript and HTML to desktop applications using Adobe Air with Flex. This often skipped over programming language/application should be considered by every serious web developer... even if the Eclipse based IDE is still USD$200, you can compile your apps in Flash using the free SDK.
