Mission Description Mission Description

Pathmaker Mission Here we are in the year 2008. 2001: A Space Odyssey is now seven years off in its predictions. There have been many interpretations of the future throughout the years by philosophers and science fiction writers alike. However, I do not believe any have really accurately predicted our future. Except maybe one man, Ray Bradbury. So as not to confuse anyone, I am referring mainly to the culture and society of America. As the years have gone by since the industrial revolution, we have come a long way as human beings as well as a developed, powerful nation. We have done great things, made remarkable scientific discoveries and won the idealogical battle of democracy and communism which threatened to engulf the world. Yes, it is true: America remains a world superpower to this day. But. Along the way from Thomas Jefferson to John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton to George W. Bush, we have seen great and terrible administrations run the country. We have changed an incredible amount in our technologies, political views, problems and solutions under all these different leaders. The diversity is what makes this country great. Well, one of many things. Throughout the years the goal has always been the same: provide a world of justice and freedom. The people elect leaders and the leaders ensure the people's security. In other words, the leaders bear the responsibility for the people so the people can lead happy and care free lives. A noble thing to do, but have the people remained the same throughout the years? Of course not. With new times come new people and new leaders. Has this noble goal of happiness gone astray through the years? Has the goal of America been lost? Or have the people of America gone astray? Surely the point of a human beings life is to be happy? There is no definite point of life, and so the individual must give life meaning. Is our goal, our constant search for happiness, really how we should be spending our short years? Perhaps not, but that is how our society is and we live with it. There will always be hedonism... In spite of this, people must remain conscious and aware of the world around them. People must remain in awe of the forces of the world around them. When we lose sight of how powerful these forces are and how little we truly know about them, we lose our humanity, perhaps our morality. It matters not how much we know, but how much of what we know is true. We begin to view ourselves as masters of the universe. We create, we destroy, we consume. Eventually, we WILL run out... Run out of food and water, living space, fuel, souls... What we run out of first may decide how we handle our future. Let us hope we don't run out of the latter first. And let us hope we haven't already run out.
